Daily Convention Highlights - July 19th

The 18th Triennial Convention was originally scheduled for 2020 in Winnipeg, but had to be postponed due to COVID-19.  The convention began today and is being held virtually. 

At previous conventions, Executive Council and the Life Members were piped in.  This convention we instead played a YouTube video of the Pipes and Drums of Canada performing.

Daily Convention Highlights - July 20th

Our second day of convention opened with 167 delegates, 172 observers, 13 Life Members, 1 Honorary Member and 14 guests.  The Finance Resolutions Committee was called back to deal with the referrals.  The first referral which would have increased the number of members we based the budget on from 27,000 to 30,000, came back as non-concurrence.  The second referral which would increase the regional education budget for 2022 from $140,000 to $260,000, came back as concurrence.  The third referral which would have increased the regional conferences budget from $400,000 to $7

Daily Convention Highlights - July 21st

Our third day of convention opened with 163 delegates, 134 observers, 13 Life Members, 1 Honorary Member and 14 guests.  The By-Laws Resolutions Committee continued with resolution 412 which would automatically increase the travel time to a full day when the travel time was more than 3.5 hours or 2 or more flights were required.  There was much debate on the resolution and it was ultimately defeated.

Daily Convention Highlights - July 22nd

Our fourth day of convention opened with 163 delegates, 134 observers, 13 Life Members, 1 Honorary Member and 14 guests.  The General Resolutions Committee continued with resolution 315 which resolved that UTE Executive Council explore options to manage the distribution and waste of alcohol at UTE national events.  The committee’s recommendation of concurrence was carried.  Resolution 306b resolved that UTE National office commit and make every attempt to reduce the use of paper and engage in finding more environmentally friendly means to run its operations.

Daily Convention Highlights - July 23rd

Our fifth day of convention opened with 163 delegates, 134 observers, 13 Life Members, 1 Honorary Member and 14 guests.  Sister Ingrid Ritums proceeded with a point of privilege and spoke of the unmarked graves of indigenous children that had been found, including some not far from where she is.  She also mentioned that companies are exploiting aboriginal art and orange shirts and that we should endeavour to purchase these items from reputable sources.  One such is orangeshirtday.org.
