By-Election in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord and the Quebec Single Tax Return

CHICOUTIMI - The Union of Taxation Employees (UTE), a Component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), is actively involved in the election campaign in sight of the by-election to be held on Monday, June 18 in the riding of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, as part of its political action campaign opposing the proposal made by the Conservative Party, the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois to implement a single tax return administered by the Quebec government in the event that they form the next government.

UTE National President Marc Brière and the Local Representative for the Political Action Committee, André Michaud, went to the Chicoutimi Tax Services Office and the Jonquière Tax Center yesterday to distribute fact sheets to our members in order to make them aware that this proposal for a single tax return, if it becomes a reality, would endanger the jobs of our members working in Quebec, and in particular in the Saguenay region, where one-third of our Quebec members are. They were also accompanied by the Regional Vice-President for the Quebec Region, Brother Jérôme Martel. They answered a number of questions from members and urged them to vote on Monday to make our voices heard and to protect our jobs. The response from the members has been extremely positive.

In addition to these visits, our National President gave interviews to Radio-Canada radio, TVA Nouvelles and the local newspaper Le Quotidien.

It is important to note that only the Liberal Party of Canada has expressed its opposition to this proposal.

The battle is just beginning and UTE will continue to fight hard to defend its members whose jobs are downright threatened.

For more information, please consult the document that was handed to our members from the Chicoutimi and Jonquière locals.
