Equal Opportunities Committee
Report of the Equal Opportunities Committee
December 2012

Robin Johnson

The Selection Committee consisting of the Chair, Co-chair, Labour Relations Officer and the newly elected President’s Representative met October 17, 2012 and October 18, 2012, to review the application forms submitted by potential Committee members. The Selection Committee subsequently selected the new Committee members for the positions of GLBT, Women, Racially Visible, Persons with Disabilities and Aboriginal Peoples Representatives. In total, 26 applications were received for the position of representatives. The Selection Committee was impressed with the quality of the applicants and the experience the applicants showed and the interest to become part of the Committee. No applications were received from the Québec, Montréal or Pacific Regions. Selection of the applications was based on the content of the essays submitted and ensuring that representatives and alternates were selected from across Canada.

The Selection Committee subsequently reviewed the Terms of Reference which have not been updated for over 10 years. Amendments were made and are being brought forward to the Executive Council for review.

The Selection Committee also commenced reviewing the budget for the National Equal Opportunities Conference that will be held in Ottawa during the month of October, 2013. A further Committee meeting will be held during the month of January, 2013 with the new Committee members to start planning the National Conference.

I also attended the Ontario Federation of Labour Equity Conference and was impressed with the facilitators and their topics around austerity and have gotten some great ideas for our National Conference.

We have a meeting with the National CRA OLEED section on November 19, 2012 and I will give a verbal update on this meeting at Executive Council.
