REPORT OF THE SAFETY & HEALTH COMMITTEE

December 2002

Chris Aylward Item 11(e)

Our committee met On November 23 & 24. Our main objective was to have preliminary discussions on the Regional Health and Safety conferences that our committee must organize and deliver.

Based on the results of our survey to the locals, there are 90 local health and safety workplace committees in CCRA with representatives of UTE.

The committee was unanimous in its decision to hold three regional conferences. Although the 2002 Convention resolution stated “four” regional conferences, the committee felt that it would be more efficient and effective to hold three. Having three conferences facilitates an equitable distribution of participants for each conference. The committee also wanted to give the opportunity to the members of the Quebec and Montreal regions to share their experience with participants of other regions.

Regional Health and Safety Conferences

Summary of decisions:

Theme: “Our Rights, Our Roles, Our Responsibilities”

Dates Locations Regions

April 11-13, 2003 Halifax NCR & Atlantic

May 9 -11, 2003 Toronto Montréal, Prairie, Southwestern Ontario, Greater Toronto

May 30-June 1, 2003 Calgary Québec, Rocky Mountains, Pacific, Northern and Eastern Ontario

Participants

Participants will have to be members of a local health and safety committee or members with a good basic knowledge of health and safety.

The committee discussed at great length the objectives of the regional conferences and agreed with a tentative agenda. A memo will be sent to the locals informing them of our preliminary decisions and asking for their input.

Workplace Health and Safety Committee Training

The course has now been distributed to all the regions in a CD- Rom format. The regions will be responsible for all the arrangements necessary to provide the course. The unions have submitted the names of their trainers to the Employer. A decision will be made as to whether more facilitators have to be trained to give the course.

National Policy Committee

We reviewed all the items discussed at the November 19th meeting. The minutes will be distributed when available.

Respectfully submitted,

Chris Aylward

Chairperson of the Committee
