Report of the Equal Opportunities Committee
June 2012

Robin Johnson Item 11(f)

I attended a CLC workshop on April 4th with my co-chair JP Fraser and LRO Erik Gagné. The workshop dealt with the Canadian Human Rights Commission Maturity model. This model is supposed to stop complaints to the Commission as Employers are going to introduce a self-assessment guidance that allows the Employer to resolve these problems themselves. Pilots of this new guideline have taken place in Canada Post and NavCan. The actual workings of this are extremely complex and Employers are going to be designated between 5 different levels of self-assessment. When we meet with the Employer in May we will be asking if they are going to become involved with this new Maturity Model.

I also attended the first of three Regional EO conferences in Vancouver. There were 49 participants and 3 Guest speakers. The session was opened by the Aboriginal Elder Tom Oleman. The first guest speaker was Nabila Shaikh from the CRA and advised the participants on how to read a CRA Equity Plan. The second guest speaker was Rosita Hall who energized the audience with her enthusiasm and discussed the positives of having a diverse workforce. The 3rd guest speaker was Nicole Nussbaum a lawyer who spoke on her personal journey of transforming from male to female.

I want to thank Lorne Roslinski for helping to facilitate a workshop for us and members of the committee Cindy Little and Jennifer Phillips for all their hard work. Erik Gagné the Labour Relations Officer for the committee did an amazing job of keeping the conference on track and resolving problems as they arise. He has even learned how important it is to carry cash for tips. A big thank you to my co-chair JP Fraser who helped take pictures of the event and did every task that he was told to do.

The participants were really involved with asking valid questions and providing their own personal stories which makes the conference so much more interesting.  I believe that it was a great success based on the feedback received from the participants. I will be able to give a verbal update on the Montreal Conference at Executive Council.

A Meeting has been planned to meet with the Employer on Employment Equity on May 28, 2012.

Respectfully submitted,

Robin Johnson
