Honours and Awards Committee

REPORT OF THE HONOURS & AWARDS COMMITTEE
March 2005
Pamela Abbott Item 11(g)
The committee met on January 12, 2005 in Ottawa.
The topic that the committee has chosen for the year 2005 is
“What has and will continue to be the repercussions to Canada
and the World with respect to the Tsunami Earthquake.”
Due to convention and other meetings through June and July, the committee
will be meeting between August 8 – 12, 2005 to review the scholarship
submissions. A notation will be on the Website to advise that applicants
will not be informed until late August 2005 of the results.
The committee discussed items from council regarding the release of scholarship
essays to other committees, or for education use. Although the applications
do become the property of UTE, the committee feels that these submission
be retained with the Honours and Awards Committee. The release of these
submissions to others could cause animosity amongst applicants and other
members of UTE in the workplace. The intent is to pick the best applicant.
DISCUSSION
The committee discussed at great lengths the service pins awards that
we present. The committee felt that we are not providing enough recognition
for our union activists that volunteer many hours to this union. The committee
has come up with some ideas but would like to hear executive council ideas.
Our suggestion is that we offer the following items along with their service
pins.
10 years of Service – Portfolio
15 years of Service – Jacket
20 years of Service – ring or watch
25 years of Service – ring or watch
30 – 35 years – Appropriate gift
Respectfully submitted,
Pamela Abbott
Chairperson of the Committee
