March 2019

Marc Brière - Item 5

  • UNASSIGNED UTE MEMBERS

As a follow-up to our last intervention, we were finally able to reach an agreement with one of the CRA officials working at Headquarters on a process that would enable us to identify the workplace of our members. From now on, we will send the CRA a list of our members whose workplace we have been unable to identify. The Agency will add the missing information and return the duly completed list to us.

On February 2, 2018, the UTE Regional Vice-Presidents (RVPs) sent their locals a list with a total of 2,815 members not yet assigned to a local. Our locals were able to identify 1,460 members who were able to be assigned to the right local.

In January 2019, we sent the Agency a revised list with a total of 1,881 unassigned members. The CRA returned that list to us, and we transferred it to the PSAC Membership Administration Section to make the necessary updates.

As of the end of January 2019, there are now only 727 members left unassigned to a local.

We are continuing to monitor the situation closely with the PSAC and the employer.

At the last PSAC’s National Board of Directors in February 2019, I again raised the subject of the significant shortfall experienced by many of our locals due to the high number of unassigned members. We have to find a way to recover those amounts for our locals. As soon as I have an update on this, I will share it with you.

  • BASIC ACCOUNTING TRAINING COURSE

The development of the basic accounting training course by Liam Merrigan, our Finance Administration Officer, was reviewed by Brothers O’Brien, Gaetz and I. We made recommendations to him, and Brother Merrigan will make the necessary adjustments. We intend to test the product at a regional/inter-regional meeting before making it a formally approved UTE course. I will keep you informed as soon as possible.

  • JOB DESCRIPTIONS FOR NATIONAL OFFICE STAFF

The National Office has finalized the drafting exercise for the job description of the Senior Labour Relations Officer, the position currently held by Brother Shane O’Brien. The document was sent to the PSAC for classification purposes.

Respectfully submitted,

Marc Brière
National President
