UTE gives $100,000 to food banks

Sisters, brothers and friends,

The Union of Taxation Employees (UTE) continues to be mindful of the welfare of not only its members, but also others, especially the most vulnerable in our society. In times of need, UTE has always stepped up on behalf of its members and has been very generous.

In addition to the crucial role our members play in helping the federal government fund a multitude of services to ensure the well-being of Canadians, our union believes it has an important social role to play in our society.

In the past, UTE has contributed to many worthy causes as the need arose. We also continue to support the requests of our members in their communities. UTE also sponsors a select charity, International Children's Awareness, which provides clean water and water systems and schools for children, among other things.

Our members also demonstrate incredible individual generosity by personally contributing year after year to the CRA Workplace Charitable Campaign for the United Way.

In these unprecedented times, the Union of Taxation Employees recognizes that we must continue to support not only our members, but also those in need in our communities.

In 2020, our Union made a historic donation of $100,000.00 to Food Banks Canada to distribute donations to food banks across the country.

Since that time, the use of food banks has increased dramatically across Canada due to the high inflation that has been going on for several months and is not going away. Many food banks are reporting recurring shortages that mean they cannot meet everyone's needs and some people are going home empty-handed. The high inflation in Canada is also negatively affecting the level of donations that food banks receive. In addition, many people across the country rely on food banks to meet their needs despite the fact that they have full-time jobs, including some UTE members.

As a result, the Union of Taxation Employees (UTE) Executive Council decided at its last meeting that UTE donate a total of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) to various food banks in each of the provinces across Canada. It was decided that the amount of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) be distributed in equal shares of ten thousand dollars ($10,000.00) for each of UTE's ten (10) regions. The UTE Regional Vice-Presidents in collaboration with our Local Executives have identified the food banks that will receive the donations. Several of our representatives have already been delivering the donations in person or via money transfers and the distribution is ongoing.

The Union of Taxation Employees is very proud of the hard work that our members do every day and their continued commitment to playing an important role in supporting our communities across Canada.

In Solidarity,
