Protect the right to strike. Repeal Section 107.

Repeal Section 107

Sisters, Brothers and Friends,

How anyone can deliver a Labour Day message supporting the unionized workers in Canada and then within two weeks attack the fundamental rights unions have fought for is nothing short of absurd!

Two weeks after Labour Day, the federal government introduced Bill C-39. Its proposed changes to the Canada Labour Code would expressly allow a minister to direct the Labour Board to end a legal strike based on the minister’s view of the “national interest.” That is no way to protect workers’ right to bargain.

When employers can count on government intervention to end a strike, they have less reason to reach a fair deal at the bargaining table. The Union of Taxation Employees stands with workers across Canada in calling on the government to remove these provisions from Bill C-39 and repeal Section 107.
