Every June, we are invited to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, resilience and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
For the Union of Taxation Employees (UTE), this month is also an important reminder: reconciliation cannot be limited to words. It requires listening, learning, accountability and concrete action.
As a union, we defend dignity, equity and justice. This also means recognizing the ongoing impacts of colonialism, systemic racism, residential schools, and the violence experienced by missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
This month, we encourage UTE members to take time to deepen their understanding. The online course Walking Together: The Path to Reconciliation, offered by PSAC in collaboration with Canadian Geographic, is a useful resource to begin or continue that journey.
We also invite members to explore the resources of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and reflect on the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Even one action, applied in our workplace, our union or our community, can help move change forward.
Reconciliation is a collective commitment. It begins with truth. It moves forward through action.
This June, let’s take the time to learn, recognize and act.
