Morning Session

The third day of Convention began with the report of the Credentials Committee. Delegates then resumed consideration of the By-Laws before the regional elections.

The morning report recorded 346 registered participants: 190 delegates, 121 observers, 9 guests, 8 life or honorary members and 18 UTE staff members.

Social Activities and Mobilization

Feedback was collected on the Fun Night and banquet. Bilingual mobilization tools were made available to members outside the convention hall. Delegates were invited to submit written messages, take photos and record short videos to support the bargaining team and express their opposition to the requirement to work in the office four days a week.

Continuation of By-Laws Business

Consideration of Resolution 404 on the organization of Equal Opportunities Conferences continued. Discussion focused on accessibility, participation and financial implications.

Regional Election Instructions and Elections

Jean Bergeron, Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee, reminded eligible voters to report to their assigned caucus with their ballots. It was not necessary to be an accredited delegate to run for office.

Regional caucuses then elected the RVPs and their alternates, as well as delegates and alternates to the PSAC Convention. The results will be announced on July 25.

Afternoon Session

The afternoon featured several decisions on the By-Laws and Equal Opportunities, a close vote and an emotional tribute.

National Vice-President Responsible for Equal Opportunities

Resolution 412 was adopted, creating the part-time position of National Vice-President responsible for Equal Opportunities on the Executive Council. Resolutions 414, 413 and 418, which define the position’s duties and place on the Executive, were also adopted.

Other Equal Opportunities Decisions

Convention adopted Resolutions 406 and 407 on gender-neutral language in the By-Laws and the composition of the Equal Opportunities Committee. Resolution 430 was also adopted to update the wording of Standing Resolution 8.

National Election Instructions

Jean Bergeron outlined the key procedures for the national elections scheduled for July 25, including eligibility and nomination requirements.

Reallocation of Unused Seats

Resolution 426, which allows unused seats at Equal Opportunities Conferences to be reallocated within the same region, passed by the narrowest of margins. The standing vote resulted in 101 in favour and 49 opposed, or 67.33%, with a two-thirds majority required. Marc Brière reminded delegates that every vote counts.

Tribute to Kimberley Koch

Laureen Harvey and Jackie Robertson paid tribute to Kimberley Koch, Pacific Regional Vice-President, who was not seeking another term. They recognized her years of activism and dedication to UTE and its members. Those in attendance gave her a warm standing ovation.

Finally, Resolution 329 on contracting out was adopted. Consideration of Resolution 311 on inclusive training at the CRA will resume on July 25.
