Attack in Toronto (North York)

Sisters and Brothers,

The Union of Taxation Employees stands in shock and sadness regarding the terrible events that took place in Toronto (North York) a few days ago.

We wish to extend our most sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and to the people who were injured by this terrible and senseless act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

The events occurred near two Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offices, the Toronto North Tax Services Office and the Toronto East Business Enquiries Call Centre.

Based on the information that we have received, we believe that all of our members are safe and sound. We are very glad and relieved. The two offices were closed yesterday but they re-opened today.

The Employer has put measures in place to support the employees affected by these events.

For anyone who requires assistance, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) (telephone line 1-800-668-9920) is available. The EAP offers resources and support in times like this.

The health and safety of our members is our top priority. Our local in Toronto North is there to support our members. The Regional Vice-President for the Greater Toronto Region is also following up closely on this situation. I want to thank them for all their hard work and dedication to our members in these difficult times.

You can rest assure that UTE National is also following up closely and will continue to provide the necessary support to our colleagues in Toronto.

In Solidarity,

Marc Brière
UTE National President
