Please find attached the Guidelines that were adopted by the Executive Council at the December 2002 meeting for the 2 National and 10 Regional UTE Scholarships.

An input call with the topics selected by the UTE Honours and Awards Committee will be published in March 2003.

Please give these Guidelines a wide distribution to the membership.

Scholarship Guidelines
And Application

The Union of Taxation Employees (UTE) each year offers two $2500 National Scholarships and ten $1000 Regional Scholarships (Atlantic, Quebec, Montreal, National Capital, Greater Toronto, South Western Ontario, Northern and Eastern Ontario, Prairie, Rocky Mountains and Pacific Regions).

Eligibility:

All scholarships are available for members in good standing of the UTE and/or their children. However, no more than one scholarship will be awarded to the same family in a given year.

For this purpose "children" of a UTE member in good standing is as follows;

a) a person of whom the member is the natural parent whether the person was born within or outside marriage.

b) a person who is wholly dependent on the member for support and of whom the member has or immediately before the person attained the age of 19 years had, in law or in fact, the custody and control;

c) a child of the member's spouse or common-law partner; and

d) an adopted child of the member.

Criteria:

The UTE Honours and Awards Committee will base their selection on the following:

· Submission by the applicant (details outlined under requirements)

· Preference may be given to people entering their first year of University, College or Institute of higher learning. However, applicants may be entering years other then their first year. Attendance must be on a full time basis.

· Prior scholastic achievement

· Financial need

· Community or Union involvement

· Union involvement of parent(s)

An applicant will not be excluded if they do not possess each and every criterion. The selection criteria will be reviewed as a whole.

Requirements:

· A 500 – 700 word essay or submission in an audio, visual (painting, drawing, sculpture, photograph) or video format that would express your view on one of the following topics:

  • Why I believe that my work or the work of my parent(s) is important to Canadians
  • Labour’s contribution to the Community
  • What you foresee as the role of organized labour in the future OR
  • Topic(s) selected by the UTE Honours and Awards Committee that will be published each March

Note: all submissions become the property of the UTE.

· Brief statements from two persons with whom you have worked during the past year, containing their general evaluation of your work, your capabilities, your character and performance. These persons could include teachers, clergy, community service leaders, supervisors etc. The statements may be sent directly to the UTE.

· Proof of registration with the name of the University, College or Institute of higher learning you will be attending must be submitted with your application. Attendance may be verified before the granting of the award.

· A transcript of your most current academic standing. This is not applicable for anyone who has been out of school for more than two years.

· With reference to the financial need, please explain your circumstances, if you desire.

The UTE reserves the right to withhold the granting of an award if no applicant is deemed to possess the necessary requirements, or for other valid reasons. The UTE Honours and Awards Committee may award a Regional Scholarship outside of a particular region if no applicants from that region are deemed to possess the necessary requirements or there were no applicants from that region.

All documents must be supplied with your application, otherwise it will be considered incomplete. Your application must be postmarked no later than May 15th. If your transcript of your most current academic standing is not available at that time, the transcript must be postmarked no later than July 7th.

3. Statement pertaining to your program and career plans

5. A transcript of your most current academic standing. This is not applicable for anyone who has been out of school for more than two years.

7. The essay or alternate format submission as outlined in the Guidelines.

8. A 3” X 4” colour photograph of yourself for use in announcing successful applicants.
