Daily Convention HighlightsWednesday July 16th, 2008The 14th Triennial Convention began today and the President welcomed all the Delegates and Observers. There was a presentation and a moment of silence to commemorate the members who had passed away since the last convention. Aboriginal Elder Tom Oleman welcomed the participants to the convention. Betty Bannon in her Presidential Address spoke of the need for union activists to work together and not fight amongst each other. Our guest speaker, Tony Martin, MP Sault Ste. Marie, addressed the topic: “Make Poverty History”. He touched on what is happening in our communities, the lack of affordable housing in the booming cities and the recent losses of well paying manufacturing jobs. He suggested that we can all be involved in changing the message politicians are hearing. Other highlights:
