Daily Convention Highlights

Wednesday July 16th, 2008

The 14th Triennial Convention began today and the President welcomed all the Delegates and Observers.  There was a presentation and a moment of silence to commemorate the members who had passed away since the last convention.  Aboriginal Elder Tom Oleman welcomed the participants to the convention.

Betty Bannon in her Presidential Address spoke of the need for union activists to work together and not fight amongst each other.

Our guest speaker, Tony Martin, MP Sault Ste. Marie, addressed the topic: “Make Poverty History”. He touched on what is happening in our communities, the lack of affordable housing in the booming cities and the recent losses of well paying manufacturing jobs.  He suggested that we can all be involved in changing the message politicians are hearing.

Other highlights:

  • The budget was adopted.
  • The salaries of the positions of President and Vice-President were increased as recommended in the Finance Committee Report.
  • The Convention adopted a resolution on a monthly dues increase of $0.25 for each of 2009, 2010 and 2011.
  • The two resolutions which referred to creating a National Hardship fund (112 and 113) were voted with the Committee’s recommendation of Non-Concurrence and were not passed.
