News Release

April 1, 2006

In February of 2005, the federal government’s expenditure review proposed $110 million in ongoing budget cuts at the Canada Revenue Agency.
The budget cuts were proposed in the following areas:

  1. Tax return processing - $20.4 million
  2. Corporate services - $50.6 million
  3. Pay compensation delivery services - $5.3 million
  4. Corporate Overhead at Headquarters - $8.0 million
  5. Corporate Overhead outside Headquarter - $7.9 million
  6. Cash Counter Closing - $5.3 million
  7. Enquiries Counter Service Reductions - $12.5 million

This means reduced, and in some cases, NO enquiry counter service to the public. You won’t be able to walk in and get answers to your tax questions from CRA staff.  You will have to either make an appointment for another time, use Internet-equipped computers to serve yourself and find your own answers or trying using the 1-800 number.

In the spring of 2005, the Union of Taxation Employees started a campaign to fight against these cuts. We were successful in having the Cash Counters remain open and are looking to keep the Enquires Counter Service as it was in past years.

THIS REDUCED SERVICE LEVEL IS COMING SOON TO A CRA OFFICE NEAR YOU!  So!  What can you do to stop this?

Contact your local MP and fill in our on-line petition to register your displeasure with this DISSERVICE TO CANADIANS.
