The Committee has not met since my last report.
However, the chair and the technical advisor met with HQ on August 11/04 to discuss a National Joint WFA Committee. This is the second meeting with HQ on this topic but this time the DG of the Human Resource was also there. No commitment was made by the employer but they did commit to sharing certain information with us. They also left the door open to setting up such a committee on an “ad hoc” basis depending on the circumstances.
The chair also is a member of the SOR Regional Joint WFA committee and at a recent meeting a large success was agreed to. The employer advised that they would be following the WFAA and use the Guaranteed Reasonable Job Offer (GRJO) and surplus letters when placing affected members from the compensation service area. It was also stated that along with SORO that the Atlantic and Quebec regions had agreed to the same process. The Prairies and Pacific had used the voluntary lateral transfer option and it was unknown what NORO was doing.
It is important that all regions follow the WFAA and I would ask on behalf
of the committee that both RVPs and locals make every attempt to get the
employer to do this.
Respectfully submitted,
Nick Stein,
Chair of the Committee
